With the LubiCool^®-XS, KNOLL Maschinenbau is expanding its range of high-pressure units with an exceptionally compact solution that supports the highest standards of precision, surface finish and process reliability. The KNOLL LubiCool^®-XS is designed specifically for sliding headstock automatic lathes used in micro-machining. With its new pump and filter concept, it is aimed primarily at users in the watchmaking, jewellery and medical industries.

With its retrofittable LubiCool^®-S, -M and -L high-pressure units, which supply metal-cutting machine tools with cooling lubricant at pressures of up to 150 bar, KNOLL already covers a wide range of requirements. However, the watchmaking and jewellery industries, with their intricate workpieces made from high-quality materials, require a specialised solution. KNOLL is meeting this need with the new LubiCool^®-XS.

As its name suggests, the LubiCool^®-XS requires very little floor space and is low enough to be positioned beneath standard bar loading magazines. It is suitable both for original equipment and for retrofitting existing machines, particularly machine tools used for micro-machining. Its mobile design also makes it highly flexible in use.

Like the larger models, the LubiCool^®-XS supplies the machine tool with cooling lubricant filtered to 25 µm for high-pressure machining. By improving chip breaking, the system also improves chip management, ensuring a fast, reliable machining process even with challenging materials such as high-alloy steels, titanium, copper and lead-free materials.

Proven high-pressure pump and new filter concept

At the heart of the LubiCool^®-XS is a KNOLL KTS screw spindle pump, which generates pressures of up to 70 bar in up to seven selectable pressure stages. It delivers a flow rate of 5 l/min. The KTS pump also features low pulsation and low noise levels, as well as high temperature and wear resistance. 

Standard equipment also includes a 30-litre tank system, a transfer pump, four switchable high-pressure outlets and an additional reduced-pressure outlet for flushing operations.

For cleaning the cooling lubricant, KNOLL has developed a new concept based on a replaceable filter bag with a filtration rating of 25 µm. The housing is lockable, helping to ensure the secure recovery of chips from valuable materials such as gold. The filter also offers a long service life and low maintenance requirements.

Options broaden the range of applications

KNOLL has pared operation of the LubiCool^®-XS down to the essentials. In the standard configuration, the pump and filter specialist therefore dispenses with a dedicated control system. Instead, an LED status indicator assists the user by using different colours and flash rates to show the operating state and indicate when the filter needs changing or the cooling lubricant needs topping up.

As an option, the unit can be equipped with the KNOLL SmartConnect control system. The app can then be used to visualise process data, set the pressure stages and view diagnostic and fault messages. Alternatively, a touch display can be plugged in for commissioning and servicing.

A copper-free version of the LubiCool^®-XS is also available, in which all components that come into contact with the medium are made from materials containing no copper. This version is recommended for particularly sensitive workpieces, helping to protect against corrosion and prevent metal contamination.

Successful field testing

Before the market launch, KNOLL provided the LubiCool^®-XS to several Swiss contract manufacturers serving the watchmaking and medical technology industries. They tested the new high-pressure unit under series-production conditions, including when machining challenging lead-free brass alloys. Their verdict: the LubiCool^®-XS is quick and easy to commission and has been running trouble-free for months. It stands out for its reliability in day-to-day production, increased process reliability and improved machining quality.
